Meet The Team: Amy Lee Newman

Will Woods

Storyteller for the Lost Souls of Gastown Tour

Amy Lee Newman (she/her) is a multi-talented performing artist who has been captivating audiences for decades as an actor, singer and dancer. She spent most of her formative years on idyllic Salt Spring Island (BC) before settling in Vancouver.

Amy’s passion for performing is evident in her extensive training and experience. She received her formal education at UVIC and the Banff Centre, honing her craft over the years in a wide range of productions. Her favourite role in recent years was ‘Mrs. Bennet’ in “Pride & Prejudice” at Chemainus Theatre Festival.

Amy spent 16 years as co-artistic director (alongside her partner, Richard Wright) at Theatre Royal in Barkerville Historic Town. Together, they produced over 75 original dramas, musicals and variety shows. She became a playwright at this time, creating solo shows highlighting the stories of Barkerville women.

Amy has broadened her skills in recent years, working as an on-camera host and narrator (with Richard) on over 30 short documentaries they have created about the BC Gold Rush, as well as the Cariboo Waggon Road Restoration Project, with another new project in pre-production.

Other new work includes a collaboration between Amy and composer/lyricist/musical director, Jim Hodgkinson on a two-hander musical, “Meadows of Stone”. The show will be produced next year.

You might see Amy’s a cappella caroling quartet, “The Christmas Revelers”, performing around the Lower Mainland during the holiday season. Her a cappella quartet brings a dynamic energy to their caroling performances and are a well-loved tradition for all who see and hear them year after year.

When not onstage Amy is passionate about swimming, cycling, photography and tap dancing. But it is on the stage where she truly shines, engaging the audience with her charismatic performance. As host for “The Lost Souls of Gastown Tour”, Amy brings her wealth of experience and talent to create an unforgettable experience for all who attend this unique walking tour.
