PROJECT SUNRISE

SUPPORTING RECONCILIATION | GIVING PROGRAM | TEAM TRAINING

Our walking tours are all about Vancouver’s hidden history. But they’re also about our dedication to our local communities and honoring the tales of this land we live and work on. For thousands of years sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people have lived in what is today Vancouver.

In 2022, we began our initiative, Project Sunrise, an effort to better acknowledge and respect the indigenous territory we walk on, to better understand our relationship with the land and the Coast Salish peoples, and to decolonize our work. Project Sunrise is a Forbidden Vancouver initiative focused on responsible business practices that honour our past and contribute to reconciliation.

This three-part initiative includes our giving program, consultation, and team training. Scroll down to find out more!

CONSULTATION & TEAM TRAINING

CONSULTATION

Across our program of walking tours and special events we cover quite a bit of ground! In many of our experiences we include stories of local indigenous people and communities. For example, the story of the community at X̱wáýx̱way in today’s Stanley Park, and what happened to the residents there when the land became a park. Or, the story of the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh heroes who in 1886 rescued survivors from Vancouver’s Great Fire from drowning in Burrard Inlet.

By consulting with local indigenous elders and knowledge keepers, we aim to make sure we are recounting important histories with accuracy, respect, and sensitivity. Most recently, we consulted with Hereditary Squamish Chief Ian Campbell, in a workshop we hosted called “Beyond the Land Acknowledgement.”

Chief Campbell spent time sharing Squamish history and cultural practices, helped us with pronunciation of local place names, filled us in on the present day challenges and successes of his nation, and described the nation’s impressive plans for the future.

TRAINING

When a new guide joins our team, they embark upon a training program lasting several months. As well as covering the fundamentals of leading a walking tour such as pacing and projection, absorbing a significant volume of information about Vancouver and its history, and practicing out on the streets with our company trainers, they also learn our company’s expectations and their responsibility for treating indigenous history and culture with sensitivity and respect. We recruit people who take that responsibility seriously.

OUR GIVING PROGRAM

Giving is at the heart of Project Sunrise. We are proud to donate a portion of all tour sales to local charities that support and uplift disadvantaged local communities, with a focus on indigenous youth. So far we have donated over $15,000 to our partner charities.
